Make and sell your own jewelry: complete guide

Jessica makes her own jewelry and sells it successfully online via Instagram, Ets and her own webshop. After reading this DIY you will know exactly how to make your own jewelry and how to sell it.

Introduction Jessica and her jewelry webshop

My name is Jessica, 43 years old and mother of 3 teenagers. On social media I regularly saw advertisements from hobby shop itsOkay about making jewelry with epoxy. This is where it all started. Working with epoxy has become so popular in recent years because it is simple, versatile and above all very fun to do. This has inspired me to make nice earrings and key rings together with my daughter.
I have been doing this for a long time now and I successfully sell a lot of the jewelry I make. Making jewelry with epoxy yourself is easy to do and it is a way to be creative.

After seeing advertisements for itsOkay in 2024, I ordered the Keychain Making Starter Kit and the Jewelry Making Starter Kit . These are complete kits including instructions for beginners. Ideal because I could get started quickly. In the end, I was working on it every day! I made epoxy keychains for everyone I loved and quickly expanded to making earrings. Before I knew it, I had a whole stock of earrings and for fun I sold them for a few euros to friends and acquaintances. This gave rise to the idea to do more with it.
What I make is mainly created from my own creativity, but sometimes also on request from customers via social media. Prices for the handmade jewelry are determined by you, depending on the materials used and time spent on it.

Sell your own handmade jewelry online

I found making jewelry so much fun that I decided to do more with it. But where can you sell jewelry that you make yourself? Fortunately, that is quite easy. Nowadays you can easily sell homemade products via online platforms such as Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook or your own webshop.

I chose to start via Instagram. After creating a social media account with a catchy company name, the first real orders came in quickly. Creating a company profile is free. If you want to advertise, this will cost money. I still enjoy designing, making and selling handmade jewelry. The name of my company says it all: Joy of Resin Art . Hopefully, through this blog, I can inspire others to make and sell beautiful jewelry themselves.

Advertising via social media

You can start selling on Instagram and TikTok right away without setting up a complete webshop. A social media account can be created in minutes and is easy to manage. Not sure how to optimally set up your Instagram or TikTok page and what content you should share? Take a look at other accounts that inspire you for ideas!
Advertising via social media such as Instagram is very easy. These platforms often even have special functions to promote and sell your products. On my profile I post messages of the jewelry I make and then promote them for a few euros a day.
Thanks to my own Instagram business page, more and more orders came in. To gain more knowledge, I followed a number of webinars on marketing and advertising. This made me think about things like my brand, packaging and shipping. I have further professionalized my business by, for example, adding flyers to every order. A nice flyer and/or business card with an order often gives that little bit extra.
After this I invested in a sticker printer to personalize my creations. With such a printer you can print texts and pictures professionally.

Jewelry webshop

After this I started working on setting up my own webshop. Nowadays you can very easily sell your jewelry online via your own webshop (for example made with a platform like Shopify), on external marketplaces like Etsy or on social media.
I still do this with great pleasure and the inspiration keeps coming, so hopefully I can continue doing this for a long time. I am grateful for the opportunities I get, such as writing manuals for itsOkay. I hope to inspire others with this. Do you have any questions about making jewelry or starting your own business? Is it allowed to earn some extra money with a hobby?

The limit at which you can earn tax-free is €8,450 (2024). It is therefore not necessary to register as an entrepreneur and sell your own jewelry as long as you stay below this amount. You do not have to register your company and you do not have to pay taxes or VAT.

Make and sell your own earrings

Now that you know how to sell your own jewelry, I will show you in this example how to make jewelry yourself. In this DIY I will take you step by step through the creative process of making earrings. In the basics, making all types of jewelry with epoxy works the same. itsOkay has silicone molds for making earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets and more.

  • Make sure your work area is neat and tidy. For your own safety, wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area (open window).
  • I clean my molds beforehand with double-sided tape or rinse them with warm water. I do this to make sure there is no dust or other dirt on them.
  • Get everything you are going to use ready: epoxy, silicone molds, dyes, cups, and mixing spatulas. Make sure you are working on a level surface.

For an average earring or pendant I use about 2 grams of epoxy resin in this example. This depends on the size and shape of your mold.

Supplies for making earrings

- Epoxy casting resin 1:1 or UV Resin
- Silicone Mold 16 pendants or choose another mold such as those for rings, earrings etc. See all molds here: silicone molds .
- Epoxy pigment . In this example I chose the mother of pearl color.
- Earring hooks , jump rings and jewelry flat nose pliers .
-
Gloves
- Mixing spatulas and cocktail sticks
- Hand drill , mixing cups , lighter or heat tool
- Kitchen paper and cotton swabs to prevent spills and clothes that can get dirty
- A well-ventilated work space

Mixing the epoxy and adding color pigments

In this example I work with the Epoxy casting resin 1:1 mixing ratio from ItsOkay. This resin is not ready-made, so I first have to mix it in the right ratio. It is important that you keep to the right ratio. Weigh it well on a kitchen scale or the scale that is available at itsOkay. After this you have to stir the epoxy carefully for 3-5 minutes.

Perhaps a useful tip: air bubbles will form during mixing. A good method to avoid this is to mix very gently and then let the mixture stand for a while.

I am going to use different colors of Mother of Pearl pigments for the first earrings. I mix the colors in advance in a separate cup, so that I can work quickly. I do not use many of these pigments in my creations. They color easily and beautifully, but it also depends a bit on your preference.

Pouring the epoxy into the silicone mold

When working with different colours, you need to pour the colours quickly one after the other. Do not pour directly from the mixing cup, but use the wooden spatula to drip the mixture into the mould. This way you can better estimate how much you can still pour and you prevent a large amount from suddenly running out of your cup. With these fine moulds it is very precise to work, which is why 'dripping in' will give a better result. You can also use pipettes . I start with the 'inside' of the flower and use the colour pearl white for this.

Immediately after pouring the first color, I pour the next color. Visible air bubbles I 'puncture' with a cocktail stick or remove with the Bubble Blaster .

In this example I work with the Epoxy casting resin 1:1 mixing ratio from ItsOkay. This epoxy must harden for 24 hours before you can remove the creations from the silicone mold. You can also cast these earrings with the UV Resin from ItsOkay. UV Resin hardens within a few minutes by means of direct sunlight or under a UV Led lamp . UV Resin is relatively more expensive.

Finishing the earrings

After 24 hours your homemade earrings are sufficiently hardened. Remove everything from the mold and remove any sharp edges with scissors or a deburrer.

Most silicone molds already have holes in them, but sometimes you want to put your jewelry together a little differently. If you're missing a hole, make them yourself with a hand drill . The silicone mold I use already has a hole to attach the rings to later.

To make these earrings I use 8 mm jump rings . These are big enough to attach the ear hook/ear stud later.

The round nose pliers and combination pliers (round and flat nose) are ideal for opening the rings. Open the ring as shown in the photo, so that you can close the ring again without deformation. Attach the ear hook/ear stud to the ring.

Of rings and ear hooks you can now assemble your own earrings. It is a bit of a fiddling with all the rings, especially if you connect two elements. A slightly larger ring (8 mm+) can help so that they have a bit more space and dangle better.

Examples of my handmade jewelry

To make these earrings I used the Mother of Pearl Pigments white, orange, magenta and light blue together with gold flakes from itsOkay.

I also mix gold flakes with the epoxy in advance. You then pour the epoxy with the gold flakes into the jewelry mold first and then, for example, light blue pigment.

You can make these beautiful earrings for yourself or sell them. Thank you for reading this tutorial and I hope you found it helpful. Love Jessica
