Applying epoxy coating to wood
Epoxy casting resin is not only suitable for making art, but also a great choice to coat your wooden table or other wooden object.
An epoxy coating gives a beautiful glossy appearance and the cracks and crevices are 100% filled, protecting the wood against moisture and pollution.
With the right techniques and some handy tips and tricks, you can apply a beautiful epoxy coating that not only protects your wood, but also creates a visual masterpiece. In this article, our epoxy specialists will show you how to properly apply an epoxy coating to a wooden table top and share valuable insights to make your project shine.
Step 1: Preparation
Make sure you have all the necessary materials on hand before you start applying the epoxy coating.
-
Buy Epoxy: Choose a high-quality epoxy casting resin that is suitable for wooden surfaces. Our advice for this is the Coating Epoxy from UltraEpoxy . This is a high-quality art epoxy that can be used widely. Extremely suitable for casting floors, coatings and even small art such as jewelry.
-
Materials required: UltraEpoxy coating epoxy , disposable nitrile gloves , 750 ml or larger mixing cup , mixing spatulas, scale, acetone and possibly a velour roller or just a spatula.
-
Workspace: Work in a dust-free workspace and make sure your surface is level so the epoxy doesn't run off. Cover the surface with cardboard boxes, for example.
Step 2: Sanding the wood
Make sure your table top is thoroughly cleaned with acetone and then sand it with grit 100-150. This will remove any irregularities. You want a smooth surface to allow the epoxy to adhere properly.
Step 3: Applying the epoxy coating
Follow the instructions on the packaging of the coating epoxy . You need approximately 300 grams of epoxy per m2 of wood. Mix well for 5-7 minutes. Also scrape the bottom and edges of the mixing cup.
Pour the epoxy evenly over the surface from the mixing cup. Start in the middle and then spread the epoxy with the mixing spatula or with your hands if you are wearing gloves. Use a (foam) brush to coat the edges of the table.
You can also use a velour roller from the hardware store for this. Then let the epoxy harden for at least 24 hours.
Step 4: Remove air bubbles
Use a heat tool or Bubble Burst spray to remove air bubbles. Let the epoxy sit for a few minutes to release excess air bubbles. Follow the curing time as stated in the instructions.
Step 5: Apply a second coat if necessary
If you want to add more depth and shine, you may want to consider applying a second coat of epoxy. Repeat the steps for mixing and applying the epoxy.
Tips from epoxy specialists:
-
Experiment with colors, pigments, and embedded objects (such as dried flowers or leaves) to create a unique design.
-
Work in a clean, dust-free and well-ventilated area to ensure the quality of your artwork and protect your health.
-
Use masking tape to prevent epoxy from running off the edges of the table top.
-
Allow the epoxy to harden sufficiently before using the table, usually this takes several days to a week.
-
Be patient and let the epoxy do its work.
- You can also pour into an epoxy table mold . This is much easier since you can just pour into a mold.
How can you remove spilled epoxy?
Did you spill something while applying the epoxy? Then you can use acetone or vinegar. By using acetone or vinegar you can easily remove any spilled epoxy. Ideal if you have spilled epoxy on the floor, for example.
Is your epoxy table dirty? Then it is not wise to use acetone. A homemade epoxy table is better cleaned with a damp cloth.
