Make your own crochet hook with epoxy

Making your own crochet hook is easier than you think. Ingrid is an expert in this field and explains in this manual step by step how to make your own crochet hook.

My name is Ingrid, I am 35 years old and owner of the webshop Inkuresincrafts .
I am married to Mattijs and together we have 2 children, Jona and Seb. In addition to being a webshop owner and content creator on social media (active under inkuresincrafts) I am also a crochet pattern designer. This gave me the idea to make and sell unique crochet hooks in my webshop.
Today I will teach you the basics of making your own crochet hook ! Because what is more fun than making something that you can use yourself or give as a gift. We will make this with epoxy: you may already know it. Read on!

Making your own crochet hook

Step 1: Preparation

We are going to make these crochet hooks with epoxy. I am using the UltraEpoxy. This is a high quality art epoxy with a lot of ease of use.
When pouring epoxy, fumes can be released. Make sure you have a well-ventilated workspace (open the window) and cover your workspace with a silicone mat or a garbage bag. Wear old clothes, if you spill epoxy you won't be able to get it out.
Make sure your workspace is level so your project hardens level. Set up everything, put on your gloves and mask.

Step 2: The silicone mold

Take the silicone mold pen (variant 1: oval). This is a mold for pens, but actually even more suitable for your own crochet hooks. You will see that a small piece of plastic sticks out at the back. This normally serves as a hole for your pen refill. We do not need this and so we cut it out with small scissors.
Now we want to make a hole at the top of the template. This is where we will insert the top of the crochet hook.
Insert the scissors through the inside of the mold through the top of the mold. Make sure it is exactly in the middle. Don't make the hole too big!

If you use a crochet hook larger than size 4.5, I recommend cutting off the very tip of the template, so you have more room to put your crochet hook through. Please note that if you do this, you will need an extra template for your crochet hooks below size 4.5. The template must fit completely around the crochet hook, otherwise the epoxy will leak out at the end.
Now take an aluminum crochet hook and insert it through the hole.

Step 3: Mixing Epoxy Casting Resin

We need about 15-20ml of epoxy per hook. I recommend mixing a little more epoxy if you need it. I use the UltraEpoxy premium for this. You mix this epoxy 1:6. This seems difficult but is easy. And don't worry: there is a mixing chart included. I need about 25 ml of epoxy. This is approximately: 15 ml of resin (A) and 9 ml of hardener (B). You have to mix this well.

To prevent bubbles, I stir slowly in one direction for 5 to 10 minutes. Set a timer for this. It is important that the components are completely mixed. Also scrape the bottom and the edges of the cup with the stirring rod

Step 4: Pouring Epoxy

Now pour the epoxy very slowly into the mold until the mold appears full. After mixing and pouring, air bubbles can form in the epoxy. I remove the air bubbles with 1 squirt of bubble blaster .
A small air bubble will now appear at the tip of the mold. Gently squeeze the end of the mold until the air bubble appears. Prick it with the toothpick, while keeping the mold squeezed.

Now very slowly let the epoxy flow into the end of the mold by slowly releasing the mold. Repeat this until all the air bubbles are gone. For stubborn air bubbles you can use your toothpick to guide them out and puncture them there.
Your mold may now appear less full, because you have removed the air bubbles. In that case, pour some more epoxy into the mold. Not too full, because we are going to add decorations to the epoxy.

Step 5: Add Resin Art Decorations

Now we are going to fill the epoxy with fun resin art decorations such as gold leaf, dried flowers and glitter.
If you want to add dried flowers, make sure they are completely covered with epoxy: this will prevent air bubbles. Use a toothpick to add these decorations. Take your time and place everything 1 by 1.

When you are ready, take the Bubble blaster and spray once over the crochet hook. Any air bubbles that still come up during curing will then disappear by themselves. Now leave your work alone for at least 24 hours. With this epoxy, ensure a constant room temperature of 20°C during curing.

Step 6: De-moulding

Carefully remove the crochet hook from the mold. Go along all the edges with the deburrer or knife. If there are still small air bubbles somewhere, we will fill them in with ready-made UV Resin in the step below.

Step 7: Finishing

If after deburring (removing sharp edges with a knife) there are still irregularities in the edges or sides, we will first fill them very carefully with UV Resin and a toothpick. Harden the fillings completely each time.

When the air bubbles are gone we can continue with the finishing. At the top of the hook it is now flat. Here we are going to apply a layer of UV Resin.
Distribute the UV Resin well with a stirring stick. Before you put it under the UV led lamp you want to go over it with a lighter. This ensures that all the air bubbles pop immediately.
Hold the crochet hook by the aluminum part and keep it as level as possible for at least 60 seconds under the UV epoxy lamp. The crochet hooks almost never stay straight by themselves, because they have a round bottom. Repeat this process for about 5 to 10 minutes. The time of curing depends on your UV Resin and the lamp you use. Your UV Resin should no longer be sticky after this.

Tip: As a finishing touch, you can also add a name to the crochet hook!

Have fun making your own crochet hooks!

  • Goedemorgen @Anastasia P Bagmeijer.
