Wave coasters onderzetters maken met epoxy - itsOkay

Make wave coasters coasters with epoxy

In this manual I will teach you how to easily make a set of 4 wave coaster coasters. A wave coaster is actually one large coaster divided into four. You can lay them down as one large coaster, but also as four small ones.

My name is Petra from the website DoorPetra . I previously wrote a manual on how to make keychains with epoxy resin. Now I have the chance to write a blog about making wave coasters. Super fun of course!

ItsOkay has several types of epoxy casting resin. For making the wave coaster I use Epoxy casting resin 1:1. This is an epoxy with a higher viscosity, this means that it is a bit thicker (more viscous). This is ideal for mixing different colors.

Epoxy casting resin consists of 2 components: A = resin and B = the hardener. You have to mix these 1 on 1. Place the unopened bottles of resin in a lukewarm bath of water for one minute and let the resin come to room temperature. This will result in fewer air bubbles in the epoxy later.

How to make a wave coaster

Step 1: Mixing the epoxy

To make the wave coaster coasters you need about 200 grams of epoxy resin in total. We use the Epoxy casting resin 1:1 . I'm going to mix the epoxy in a silicone mixing cup . First I weigh 100 grams of the epoxy resin (a). Then I weigh 100 grams of epoxy hardener (b). The instructions for mixing are on the back of the bottles. When I have exactly 100 grams of both, I add them together in 1 mixing cup.

Stir the epoxy resin well for at least 1 minute. Also scrape the bottom and sides of the mixing cup to make sure everything is perfectly mixed.

Let the epoxy mixture sit for about 1-2 minutes to allow any air bubbles created during stirring to dissolve. Carefully pour the epoxy into the silicone mold to minimize the formation of air bubbles.

Step 2: Add color pigment to the epoxy

I divide the epoxy resin into three disposable cardboard cups. In each cup I will add a different color or decoration. When this is finished I can easily pour everything in one go.

Read the instructions for use. In this example I use the pigments of itsOkay. Before you can use these pigments for epoxy resin, it must be shaken well. I choose the colors: light gray, light pink and pink.

I use about 6 to 8 drops of pigments per cup of epoxy resin. The instructions recommend a maximum of 1-2 drops per 10 grams of resin. After that, it's a matter of stirring well again. Let your resin mixture 'rest' for 1-2 minutes again before pouring.

Step 3: Adding the decorations

With gold or silver leaf metal flakes you can finish your epoxy coasters completely. In this example I use silver decoration flakes from itsOkay. Add as many silver flakes to the epoxy resin as you like. Be careful, a lot will quickly come out of the pot! Mix the desired amount of leaf metal with the epoxy mixture and let it rest for 1-2 minutes.

Step 4: Pouring the epoxy into the mold

Now comes the fun part! After all that stirring and waiting you can finally fill the silicone mold wave coaster coasters with the epoxy resin. In this example I start in the middle with the epoxy mixture mixed with the silver leaf metal flakes. After that I pour the epoxy mixture with the light gray pigment on the edges. Finally I pour the epoxy mixture with the light pink pigment. I finish in the outer edge with pink.

In my enthusiasm I forgot to take a picture of each step. This was very difficult with gloves on. After casting I made some shapes in the epoxy resin with one of the resin art tools .

Step 5: Let the epoxy cure

My least favorite part… waiting. Let the epoxy cure according to the directions on the bottle. This resin is hard in about 12-24 hours. But after 24 hours you will have a beautiful result that you can be proud of.

Step 6: Finishing

I choose to finish the edges of this wave coaster with a silver paint marker . This is of course not necessary, but it does give a very nice effect.

How to make black epoxy coasters

To show the making of the epoxy coasters well, I made another set of wave coaster coasters. Here I divided the epoxy resin again over three silicone mixing cups : epoxy with metallic white pigment (1 and 2), epoxy with black pigment and glitter (4) and epoxy with silver leaf metal flakes (1). When pouring with multiple colors (or glitter) I always pour from the inside out. This gives the best effect.

Which epoxy to use for epoxy coasters?

You can use different types of epoxy resin to make coasters. Our epoxy casting resin 1:1 and the Ultraepoxy are the most suitable. Both epoxy resins are of high quality and have a high UV resistance. The epoxy casting resin 1:1 is thicker and is therefore better to mix with color pigments to make flower patterns, for example. The Ultraepoxy usually hardens beautifully and is slightly higher in quality, but less suitable for color pigments.

It is also important to choose an epoxy for making coasters that is heat resistant. Our epoxy resins are heat resistant. Please note that very hot cups can still leave rings on the epoxy coasters.
