Make a maternity gift cloud

The birth of a child is one of the most special moments in life. With epoxy you can capture this memory forever. You pour the epoxy into a silicone mold and after hardening you have created a beautiful piece of art. Personalize the birth cloud with the name, weight, length or date of birth of the baby. Super cool to make this yourself or to give as a maternity gift. Personal and unique.

My name is Silvia and I am busy making fun and affordable gifts. On Instagram you can find me under the name Silviasjollycreations . Here you can admire my creations and order handmade items. Since November 2023 I have been making fun gifts from epoxy and wood. For the birth of a new world citizen I made this birth cloud. In this manual I will take you through how to make this beautiful birth cloud.

How do you make a maternity gift cloud?

Step 1: Mix the epoxy

For the entire silicone mold you need about 170 ml of epoxy. For casting epoxy art, Ultraepoxy is the favorite. You mix this epoxy 100:60. We are going to cast this silicone mold in two parts. For the first layer you need 104 ml of Ultraepoxy (65 ml of resin and 39 ml of hardener). Always weigh epoxy on a scale, so that you make exactly enough. If you order epoxy from ItsOkay, you will receive a handy mixing schedule.
Once all the quantities are measured out, stir the epoxy resin thoroughly for about 3 minutes. Use your wooden mixing spatula to go around the sides and bottom of the mixing cup. Add the pigment color as desired. I added six drops because I didn't want the color to be overpowering. Stir well again. Let the epoxy sit for about 5 minutes so that the bubbles that were created by the stirring already rise to the top.

Step 2: Pouring the silicone mold

Now fill the mold 2/3 full with epoxy. Try to pop the bubbles with a heat gun (for example a lighter). Not too long or you risk melting the mold. If there are still bubbles, you can pop them with the Bubble Blaster . You can also pierce the bubbles with a toothpick. Let the epoxy harden for 12 hours.

Step 3: Personalize the birth cloud

After the first layer of epoxy has hardened, you can create the texts. To print the name, date of birth, weight and time of birth of the baby, I can recommend the sticker printer . You can also choose a paint pen . If you choose the printer, you can use the accompanying app "Phomemo" to create your own designs, choose different fonts and more. For this creation, I use a transparent print roll, so that the stickers are the least noticeable. The color of the birth cloud is light.
When I have made all the texts and am satisfied with the dimensions, I stick the printed texts on the birth cloud. Of course, you can decide for yourself where you like this best. You can also choose to make the name in a different font than the other texts. This is entirely personal.

Step 4: Pour final layer of epoxy

Make a bit more epoxy resin. Stir well for a few minutes. Let the epoxy stand for a while, so that the air bubbles pop. Then pour the rest of the silicone mold full. Then you can pop the last air bubbles with the Bubble Blaster. I pour the mold a bit fuller so that a bulge is created. Epoxy shrinks a bit during curing. By pouring the mold a bit fuller, your end result will be more beautiful.

Step 5: Drill holes

Carefully and patiently remove your artwork from the mold. Then drill holes with a hand drill or electric drill . You drill holes in the cloud so that you can hang it up as a beautiful decorative piece. This looks great in the nursery and is also fun to give as a maternity gift.

At the bottom of the large cloud you drill three holes and at the top two. The small clouds will hang on the large cloud, so it is important that they also get holes. Drill 1 hole per cloud. You can decide for yourself where to drill the holes, but in my opinion the middle looks best. Then use a pair of pliers to screw screw eyes into the holes. Tight is tight, you don't have to turn too far.

Step 6: The final touch

Make the chain at a length that you like. The chain that you make on the big cloud should be the longest. Make sure that you use different lengths for the small clouds. This creates a playful effect, but also ensures that the clouds do not hang against each other. When you are satisfied with the lengths, the birth cloud is ready. If necessary, you can add a nice edge with a Posca paint marker .

I hope I was able to give you some good tips. Please send me a message via Instagram Silviasjollycreations with your own birth cloud. Have fun making the birth cloud. Greetings Silvia.
