Epoxy "Petri Art" maken - itsOkay

Making epoxy "Petri Art".

The beautiful petri art or "petri dish art" is made by pouring alcohol ink into epoxy casting resin in a silicone mold. Also known from "Daniel Cooper" on Youtube. The ink meanders through the epoxy resin and creates beautiful effects. It looks SO impressive! And yet it is easy to do and super fun to make!

My name is Kristel, you can find me on Instagram under the name Het Kristalier. I am married, mother of 2 boys and am a pedagogical coach with a hobby that got out of hand: epoxy resin art. It is something that gives me a lot of energy and is just really fun to get started with. Especially making Petri Art is one of my favorite activities. It is a technique that really becomes more fun with practice and practice. It took me a few weeks before I had mastered it properly.

How to Make Petri Art with Alcohol Ink

    Step 1: Preparation

Once you have everything ready, it is important to give the epoxy a 10 minute heat bath (au-bain-marie). By preheating the epoxy, it hardens a little and becomes a little thicker. This will allow the alcohol ink to mix better later. This will also ensure that there will be fewer air bubbles in the epoxy later.

    Step 2: Mixing Epoxy

Mix the epoxy casting resin 1:1 according to the instructions on the packaging. If you mix larger quantities, you can fill more silicone molds at once. Then mix gently and thoroughly with a (wooden) mixing spatula. Mix for at least 5 minutes. Then let the epoxy stand for 10 minutes, so that most of the air bubbles can pop by themselves.

    Step 3: Pouring the epoxy

Now pour the epoxy into the silicone mold. Fill the mold with 2/3 of the epoxy. The alcohol ink that we will add later will make the mold even fuller. It doesn't matter if there are still air bubbles in the resin. Now it's a matter of waiting until the resin has become viscous (a bit thicker). Viscosity is important so that the white alcohol ink can't sink too far down. There is no exact time for this because it really depends on environmental factors such as room temperature, humidity, etc.

Step 4: Add Piñata Alcohol Ink

This is my favorite step! You can now add the pinata ink colors. You can make it as simple or complicated as you want. 1 color, 2, etc. Really a matter of experimenting. With a smaller silicone mold, like the one I use, 1 drop of alcohol ink per color you use is enough. Shake the bottles well before use: about 1 minute. Then you can add the drops to the epoxy resin. Then take the bottle with white alcohol ink. Shake this well: also at least a minute. White is also called the 'sinker' that ensures that the drops sink down. You add one drop of sinker per ink color. More is really not necessary, otherwise the ink colors can sink too much and you will not create the desired effect of the Petri art.

    Step 5 (optional): Add effects

If you like it you can add more effects. If you want, you can stir the epoxy with a clean skewer 20-30 minutes after pouring. For example, choose a rotating movement with the skewer. It is normal for some dye to stick to the skewer when you remove it. You can prevent this by cleaning the skewer after use before applying the effect to the next mold.

    Step 6: Finishing

After 24 hours you can remove your artwork from the silicone mold. You can make beautiful pendants or earrings from it. You can even stick a magnet on it and make a fridge magnet for example. If you are going to make a piece of jewelry from it you can make a hole with a hand drill . Then you screw a pendant on it.

    Have fun exploring this technique!
