Processing epoxy on shells

In this manual Marleen describes how to work shells/oysters with epoxy. You can apply a coating to a shell with UV Resin or even make a small artwork in the shell.

My name is Marleen de Boer and I make art with epoxy. Personally, I really like to make art and jewelry with materials from nature. Think of materials such as dried small flowers , feathers, sand and shells . I like to collect these myself when I am out and about. It feels like I am making something that is 'real'. Something that is made by our own mother earth. And let's be honest: those are works of art in themselves!

Applying epoxy to shells

You can apply UV Resin to shells and make something beautiful out of it or by means of a thin layer 'coat' the shell with it. This is very easy and easy to do for beginners. UV Resin is a 1-component resin and is ready to use. The resin hardens within a few minutes by means of UV light from the sun or under a UV lamp . UV Resin is the perfect epoxy for shells. It is also a fun and easy project for beginners.

If the shells are dirty or greasy, clean them thoroughly with degreaser or alcohol. Let them dry completely. Place the shells on a flat surface and carefully pour a little epoxy over them.

You can fill the shell with decorative sand (or chinchilla sand from the pet store) and other beach finds and then cast it with epoxy. As in the example below.

If you choose to fill the shell with beach decorations you can create the beach effect below with epoxy pigment . You do this by working in layers. First you pour a layer of epoxy mixed with dark blue pigment . Apply this carefully with a stirring stick from the mixing cup, so that you do not add too much.
After this, pour a rim of mixed epoxy with a slightly lighter blue pigment. Finally, pour a layer of transparent epoxy (without pigment), so that the shell is nicely filled. Start with the sand and then pour upwards. The idea is that the epoxy does not mix too much with the color pigments. Then let this flow into each other by blowing lightly with a hair dryer.
Finally, pour a thin edge of epoxy mixed with white pigment to create the wave. Again, apply this carefully with a stirring stick and do not pour directly from the mixing cup. Then let this blend together again by blowing very lightly with a hair dryer.

Small paintings in shells

You can also go a step further and make real little works of art from your shell. For this I use materials from nature. For example, I make small real dried flowers variant 1 trees in a shell. From real sand and I make a small beach in a shell, this creates a small work of art in a shell.

First paint a background in the shell/oyster. After this you pour a thin layer of UV Resin each time, to which you then add something. It is reminiscent of a theater, where a backdrop is also used that creates depth for the various decor pieces.

UV Resin is ready to use and dries within minutes using UV light (the sun or a UV lamp). Handy, because you can work quickly. Let the epoxy dry for at least an hour in the sun or a few minutes under a UV resin lamp . Patience is a virtue. If you go too fast, there is a chance that the epoxy is still sticky and your fingerprints will be on your artwork . This will only cost you more time in the end.
Finally, spray a layer of transparent varnish over the artwork and let it dry thoroughly.

In the art I make I often paint silhouettes. This is because it is difficult to paint something so small in great detail. See for example the examples above in which I painted people and birds. This gives something mysterious to the artwork. I paint the trees. I make the leaves and blossoms from the dried small flowers variant 1.

Tips for painting on epoxy

If you want to paint something that is difficult, always do this on hardened epoxy. This is because you can easily wipe it away. If you fail, you prevent the rest of what you have already painted from being ruined.

Also always make sure that the paint has dried well, otherwise the paint can come loose and mix with the epoxy. This is a waste. For example, blow-dry the paint briefly so that it dries well in between.
