DIY: Making Christmas decorations with epoxy

Christmas is just around the corner and how much fun is it to make your own decorations for the Christmas tree. You can also attach these fun homemade Christmas decorations to a card and give original Christmas cards this way.

How to make Christmas decorations with epoxy?

Christmas is the perfect time to get started with DIY projects. From beautiful Christmas ornaments to atmospheric figurines, the possibilities are endless. Which Christmas decoration are you going to create this year? With epoxy you can go in many directions. You simply pour epoxy into a silicone mold and add fun decorations. Curious how this works? In this article we share inspiration and ideas to make your own epoxy Christmas decorations.

Supplies:

- UltraEpoxy casting resin
- Silicone mold of your choice. For these Christmas creations I choose the Silicone mold Christmas pendants
- Scales , Stirring sticks and Cups (for mixing)
- Pigments and glitters for example
-Bubble blaster spray
- Wet baby wipes (in case I spill epoxy)
- Face mask, plastic gloves and protective equipment, such as a silicone mat for the surface you are crafting on

Step 1: Preparing and mixing the epoxy

To make these cutest Christmas hangers I use epoxy casting resin. Epoxy hardens to a kind of hard plastic-like synthetic material. Epoxy consists of 2 components: a resin and a hardener. How much epoxy you need depends on the project and how much you are going to make.

The silicone mold Christmas hangers contains 45 grams of epoxy per mold. You can easily calculate this by weighing the mold empty and with water in it. The difference is the content. The product page of itsOkay also indicates how much epoxy is in each mold: super handy!

Mix the epoxy according to the instructions on the bottle packaging. Always use a scale to weigh the amount. You can pour a silicone mold in one go, or in two. I choose to pour this mold in 2 times. I give both layers a different cheerful Christmas color. Mix the epoxy casting resin carefully for 3-5 minutes. Scrape well along the edges and bottom of the mixing cup. Then add your favorite color pigments , glitters or decorations .

Step 2: Pouring the epoxy into the silicone mold

In this example I pour the silicone mold in 2 colors. I pour the first color at the height of the image in the silicone mold. This will be the front of the pendant. The image in the silicone mold can be a reindeer, Christmas tree deer or Christmas ball. You can of course also pour the silicone mold in one go.

Spray the Bubble Blaster 1-2 times over the epoxy to pop any air bubbles. You can also use a lighter to pop the bubbles, but be careful not to touch the edges of the silicone mold with the flame. Otherwise, you risk fusing the mold with the epoxy. Let the epoxy cure according to the instructions. Epoxy is usually cured within 12-24 hours.

Step 3: Pouring the second layer

After 12-24 hours, the epoxy is fully cured. If you pour the silicone mold Christmas hangers in 2 times like I did, you can apply the next layer of epoxy after 4-5 hours. If you do this after 1-2 hours, the epoxy will mix and that is exactly what you don't want. Now fill the silicone mold to just above the edge, so that a small bulge is created. Epoxy shrinks slightly during curing.

Pop any air bubbles with the Bubble Blaster Spray and then allow the epoxy to fully cure for 24 hours.

Step 4: Remove creations from the mold and finish

After at least 24 hours the epoxy is fully cured and the homemade Christmas pendants are ready to be removed from the silicone mold. You can finish them off by, for example, attaching cheerful colored Christmas ribbons to the pendants.
