Making ashes memory with epoxy resin (commemoration)

What could be more beautiful than a tangible memory of your loved one that you can make yourself? A beautiful accessory with the ashes of your loved one, forever immortalized in epoxy resin. You can now do this yourself and I will show you step by step how.

My name is Maaike Munneke-Merks, I have been making memorial jewelry & accessories for 2 years. My company is called ' As in resin '. In the meantime, I receive many requests and I have also been able to make many beautiful, unique and personal memories. This varies from rings to large wind catchers.
I am allowed to write this beautiful manual for you. Because I make memories that have emotional value, I am constantly looking for the right products. Sometimes there are just too many air bubbles in it, it is too liquid or too thick to pour. I prefer to use the UltraEpoxy premium epoxy resin. The result with this is very beautiful, without air bubbles. The silicone molds from itsOkay are also nice to use and everything is always delivered quickly.

How do you make a cremation jewelry?

Step 1: Preparation

First I prepare everything. I use the Epoxy casting resin (UltraEpoxy Premium), because this epoxy produces few air bubbles. Are you going to pour transparently? Then always add UV blocker to your epoxy mixture. Epoxy yellows in the long term. By using a UV blocker you prevent yellowing.

Because I am going to process a heart in a heart, I choose the silicone mold stones. In this mold is also a shape of a heart. It is a beautiful subtle heart that I am going to process in the larger heart mold.

Step 2: Making the heart from ash

We start by making the small heart of ash. For this you need the silicone mold small cabochons. I make a little epoxy resin for this. You don't need much because the shape in this mold is very small. After I have mixed the epoxy resin, I let it rest for a while. This so that all the air bubbles can pop. When I have let the epoxy stand for about 15 minutes, I mix the epoxy resin with the ash. Even after stirring the epoxy and ash mixture, air bubbles can arise. I then also let this stand for a while so that the air bubbles can escape.

After letting the epoxy resin set, I carefully pour the epoxy and ash mixture into the silicone mold. Let it cure for 12-24 hours before removing it from the mold.

Step 3: Incorporate the heart of ash into the first layer

When the heart of ash is ready, I can process it in a first transparent layer of epoxy resin. I leave this transparent, so that the heart of ash is clearly visible and this also gives a nice 3D effect. Mix a small amount of epoxy resin for the silicone mold that we are going to cast. Let the epoxy rest again for a while, so that all the air bubbles can pop.

After this I dip the heart of ash briefly in the epoxy resin before placing it in the mold. This prevents air bubbles from forming under the heart when pouring the transparent layer. Then I place the heart of ash nicely straight in the larger mold and pour the transparent epoxy resin over it until it is completely submerged. I also let this transparent layer harden for at least 24 hours before pouring the next layer.

Step 4: The layer with decorations

The transparent layer was hardened within 24 hours and I can now continue with the next layer. For this I use gold flakes with a kind of pearly sheen. You can of course choose what you like best, or use it as a 'background' layer. After mixing I let the epoxy resin rest for a while to let the air bubbles pop. I add a little gold flakes to the epoxy resin and mix it well again. After about half an hour I pour this layer into the mold. I let this layer harden for 24 hours.

Step 5: Removing the creation from the mold

It's done! After a few days of patience, I can finally take it out of the mold. And it turned out beautiful! The result is gorgeous, especially with the colors of the gold flakes. The silicone mold heart has a beautiful bulge, which gives the end result a nice 3D effect. The heart of ash is clearly visible. So you have made your own, unique and precious memory of ash and epoxy.

Epoxy Ash Jewelry Making Tips

  • Please note that real ash is heavy and can sink in epoxy. Please note this if you want to process ash in a certain way.
  • If you mix the ash with epoxy, many air bubbles are released. If you pour too quickly, many air bubbles are created in resin art artwork. This makes the artwork extra vulnerable and less beautiful.
  • When removing the bubbles, be careful not to 'burn' the silicone molds with a burner. Too much heat can melt a mold and stick to the epoxy.
