Epoxy jewelry making manual

[1] What is Resin Art?

Resin art is, in short, making art using epoxy resin. You can create the most beautiful effects by coloring this resin with pigments and pouring it with different techniques.

What is epoxy resin?
Epoxies are polymers that are produced as a liquid and turn into a solid form through a chemical reaction. Cured epoxy resin is very strong. Epoxy resin has a compressive and tensile strength that is twice that of concrete. After the epoxy resin dries, a kind of hard plastic is created. Cured epoxy resin is completely safe for both humans and animals to wear.

How do the colors come into Resin Art?
By coloring the epoxy resin, many different end results can be created using different techniques, types of pigments and tools. Consider, for example, imitating natural stone, but also abstract art. Epoxy resin can be colored using special pigment colors and powders. By mixing this with glossy pigments and matte pigments, playful effects can be created.

Plenty of possibilities! Do you have an idea of your own and are you curious whether we can realize it for you? Don't hesitate and contact us!

[2] Which epoxy resin do I need?

The use of suitable epoxy resin is important for the end result of your artwork. We have two types of epoxy resin, both of which have advantages and disadvantages.

1. Ready-made jewelry UV resin. Do you want to use resin that is very easy to process? Are you going to fill a small mold such as an earring or pendant that is no deeper than 1 cm? Then choose our ready-made UV resin jewelry. This resin is ready to use and hardens within a few minutes using UV light. You let this resin dry in direct sunlight, when it is cloudy, or under a UV lamp.

2. Epoxy resin 1:1 . This epoxy resin is suitable for large and small surfaces. You can use it for small and large molds up to 3 cm deep. This epoxy resin is also cheaper. Mix the resin and hardener according to the ratio. Mix this thoroughly for three minutes and use a scale to weigh everything properly. After mixing, curing begins. After 24 hours (depending on temperature and layer thickness) the epoxy has reached its final strength.

Make sure that no water gets into the epoxy resin, otherwise it will no longer be usable. Do not use too much glitter or color pigment because then the epoxy resin cannot harden properly. Use a maximum of 5 grams of pigments per 100 grams of resin.

Our advice

For making jewelry in small molds (max 1 cm deep), we recommend ready-made jewelry using UV resin. This epoxy resin is also included in the starter packages and is the easiest to use. Specially developed to make jewelry easily and therefore very suitable for small objects such as pendants, rings and bracelets.

The epoxy resin 1:1 is more suitable for large objects such as coasters or pots and you can therefore also use this epoxy resin very well for making jewelry.

[4] How does it work: Explanation on paper.

If you purchased the Jewelry Making Starter Package, it contains everything you need. You can create a work of art using these steps:

Step 1. Make sure you have created a spacious work surface in advance where you can start pouring. It is advisable to place some newspapers or garbage bags underneath to prevent accidental spillage of epoxy resin. Put on gloves and work in a well-ventilated area.

Step 2. Arrange the silicone molds for easy access and make sure they are all level. If there are dust or glitter on the mold, remove them with a piece of tape. Make a wad of the tape or adhesive tape and remove the dirt.

If you are going to pour objects or dried small flowers, pour this in 2 times. First you make a thin layer of epoxy resin into which the object will later be placed. Let this harden first before you place the object here. If you immediately add an object with epoxy resin, it can float or sink. You don't want that.

If you add a photo or drawing to the epoxy resin: laminate it first or print it out on transparent paper. Otherwise, the epoxy resin may affect your photo or drawing.

Step 3. Choose which epoxy resin you want to use. In these examples we use the ready-made jewelry UV resin . You apply this epoxy resin in a silicone mold directly from the bottle.

You can give your Resin Art a unique twist with special color pigments. Are you going for a nice opaque color or are you going for a transparent color? See decorations and color pigments . Are you going to use color pigments? Then you first pour the epoxy resin into a small cup with a maximum of a few drops of pigments. Stir this well and then add it to a mold.

Step 4. Once you have filled the molds, you can run a heat tool along the epoxy resin to pop the bubbles. You can do this, for example, with a lighter, but do this carefully and do not touch the mold.

Step 5. The 1:1 epoxy resin dries on its own within 24 hours. The ready-made jewelry UV resin hardens by means of UV light (sunlight). NB. If you do it right, this epoxy resin will dry within minutes. The following is important:

- First, this epoxy resin must dry in UV light. This means in direct sunlight and this also works when it is cloudy. The UV epoxy resin does not dry indoors in front of a window. Level your creation in direct sun/cloud cover. When the sun is shining the epoxy resin hardens within 10-15 minutes and when it is cloudy within about 30-45 minutes. Then turn the mold over and let it dry again.

- Never add too many glitters or pigments to the resin. The composition of the epoxy resin is then no longer correct and the resin can no longer harden. So be careful not to add too many pigments or glitter, etc. to the resin.

Step 6. Remove rough edges with pliers or scissors and polish them if desired. If necessary, you can finish the pendant with a thin layer of epoxy resin, transparent lacquer or nail polish. Get started quickly and make the most beautiful key rings, necklaces, charms, rings and bracelets!

Other tips
Epoxy flows level, so you must always ensure that your molds are level. We use a level board, we put baking paper over it so that you can throw it away later and keep it clean.
