What is Epoxy casting resin?

Epoxy is a liquid synthetic resin. Epoxy casting resin is used, among other things, for making jewelry and art. Working with epoxy casting resin is very simple. Epoxy consists of 2 components that you have to put together. An A and a B component. After joining, a chemical reaction occurs that releases heat and causes the epoxy to harden into a hard, plastic-like material.

Epoxy casting resin should not be confused with polyester. It looks similar, but the curing principle and properties are completely different. Epoxy is suitable for making art because:

  • It emits almost no odor and is therefore more pleasant to work with in closed spaces.
  • Epoxy hardly shrinks. You don't want your work of art to shrink in a mold.
  • Epoxy is also stronger and adheres better to different surfaces.
  • Unlike polyester, epoxy is waterproof.

Supplies Resin Art

You don't need much to start making resin art with epoxy. To start with resin art you need some basic products, these are:

If you have ordered these products or already have them at home, you can get started making Resin-Art with epoxy. In the next section we explain the difference between normal epoxy and UV epoxy .

Which epoxy do I need?

Which epoxy do you need? We help with your choice. The use of suitable epoxy is important for the end result of your artwork. We have two types of epoxy, both of which have advantages and disadvantages.

epoxy casting resin

  1. Epoxy Casting Resin 1:1 . This epoxy is suitable for large and small surfaces. You can use it for small and large molds up to 3 cm deep. This epoxy is also cheaper.
Mix the resin (bottle A) and the hardener (bottle B) according to the ratio. Use a scale to weigh everything properly. Stir the mixture well for three minutes and also scrape the edges. After casting, curing begins. After 24 hours (depending on temperature and layer thickness) the epoxy has reached its final strength.
  2. UV Resin . Do you want to use an epoxy that is very easy to process? Are you going to fill a small epoxy mold such as an earring or pendant that is no deeper than 1 cm? Then choose the ready-made jewelry epoxy.
This resin is ready-to-use and hardens within a few minutes using UV light. You let this epoxy dry in direct sunlight, when it is cloudy, or under a UV lamp.

Our advice

For making art in small molds and a maximum of 1 cm deep, we recommend ready-made UV resin jewelry. This epoxy is also included in the epoxy starter packages and is the easiest to use. Specially developed to make jewelry easily and therefore very suitable for small objects such as pendants, rings and bracelets.

For large objects and deeper than 1 cm, such as epoxy coasters or pots, the epoxy casting resin 1:1 is more suitable. But you can also use this epoxy very well for making jewelry.

Make sure that no water gets into the epoxy because then it will no longer be usable. Do not use too much glitter powder or color pigments because then the epoxy casting resin cannot harden properly: use a maximum of 5 grams of pigments per 100 grams of epoxy.

Epoxy pigment colors

Do you want to color epoxy? You can give your Resin Art a unique twist with dyes (special pigment for epoxy). Do you go for a nice black opaque color or do you go for a transparent red color for your epoxy artwork? Below you will find the 3 most common types of pigment.

epoxy resin for jewelry and art

Epoxy pigment powder (Mica powder)

You give a luxurious look to your work of art with "mica" powder pigments. Mica stands for metallic. For example, use the epoxy metallic pigment powders. These mica powders are available in 24 colors and are among the absolute bestsellers. These types of pigments have a light metallic color. With 10 grams of pigment powder you can color approximately 1000 grams of epoxy throughout. So a little bit is enough for a pendant or other piece of jewelry.

Transparent and opaque pigments
The transparent and opaque pigments from itsOkay have been specially developed for creating the most beautiful epoxy works of art. You can mix them with all types of epoxy or polyester. The great thing about these epoxy color pigments is that you need a maximum of a few drops of pigment to achieve an opaque color.

The Transparent pigments are of high quality. They have a light opaque color and are therefore still transparent.
The Opaque pigments have full coloring and covering power.

Alcohol Ink from Jacquard
This is a special Alcohol Ink for epoxy . In addition to the fact that this ink is often used for making epoxy jewelry and coasters, it can also be used on all non-porous surfaces such as ceramic, wood, stone, glass, metal, plastic, paper, canvas, vinyl, leather, foil, acrylic, etc. polymer clay and more.

Pigment paste
Epoxy Pigment color pastes give a very nice opaque and even color to your work of art. The pots can be ordered per color. For example, use this Epoxy pigment paste . These high quality colors can be ordered in more than 23 colors.

You only need 2-3% epoxy pigment paste to give a full opaque color to your creation. Widely applicable to obtain, for example, epoxy, gel coats, top coats, cast resin in the desired color. Colors: white, black, gold, silver, blue, red and more!

What is UV Resin?

UV Resin is epoxy that hardens using ultraviolet light (UV light) . You can harden the epoxy easily and quickly using a UV lamp or by placing the resin in the sun. After curing, the end result will be hard and glass-like, just like with epoxy. UV Resin is widely used for making jewelry and other art.

UV epoxy resin ready-made

The UV Resin has been specially developed to make the most beautiful jewelry and other art. This resin is ready-to-use and quickly drying. This resin is also UV-resistant for a long time, so your epoxy creations will remain beautiful for a long time. Thanks to a handy spout, you can pour the epoxy resin directly from the bottle into a mold.
