How much epoxy do I need?

Are you planning to work with epoxy casting resin and want to buy epoxy casting resin? But you have no idea how much epoxy you need exactly? We are happy to help you.

Calculate the required amount of epoxy yourself

There is a simple rule of thumb to determine how much epoxy you will need. Keep in mind that this is an estimate, so always order a little more epoxy.

Use the following formula to calculate the number of liters of epoxy

Formula : length in centimeters x width in centimeters x layer thickness in centimeters x 1.1 : 1000.

You multiply the surface area by 1.1, because 1100 grams of epoxy equals 1 liter. Then you divide the result by 1000, so that you know how many kg you need.

With this formula you can easily and accurately calculate the number of kilos of epoxy you need for a rectangular or square table top. See at the bottom of the page an example of the required epoxy for a table. For a round table top you use the formula: 3.14 x radius in centimeters x radius in centimeters x layer thickness in centimeters x 1.1.

How much epoxy is needed for silicone mold?

If you are pouring epoxy into a silicone mold and you want to know how much epoxy, jesmonite or plaster you need, you can do the following. By weighing the silicone mold, you can determine how much epoxy casting resin is needed. You first weigh the empty mold and then the mold filled with water.

The difference in weight is the number of liters that fit in the silicone mold. 1 liter of epoxy is equal to 1.1 kg. So you have to take the number of liters that fit in the mold x 1.1. For example, if 200 ml of water fits in the silicone mold, the formula is as follows: 200 x 1.1 = 220 grams of epoxy required.

Example: Epoxy required for table coating

Below is an example of how much epoxy you need for a coating on a wooden table. How much epoxy you need depends on the desired layer thickness. For table tops and art projects, an average epoxy layer varies between 3 mm and 6 mm. For floor coatings, the layer thickness can vary, but a thickness of 3 mm is usually sufficient.

1. Determine the surface area

Measure the surface area of the table or object you want to coat accurately. The table in our example is 160 x 90 cm. The surface area is therefore 1.44 m² (160x90).

2. Calculate how much epoxy you need

To determine how much epoxy you need, multiply the surface area by the desired layer thickness. This will give you the volume of epoxy needed in cubic meters. Always add an extra 10 to 20 percent to your calculation to ensure you have enough epoxy for your entire project. This will help to account for any mistakes or waste.

In this case that is 1.44 m² x 120% = 1.73 m². We then assume an average layer thickness of 3 mm. 1.73 m² x 3 mm layer thickness = 5.2 m². So for this table 5.2 m² of epoxy is needed.

By taking into account cm x layer thickness and cm x width you have your own resin calculator. It is therefore very important to take into account the thickness of the epoxy layer.

3. Buy the right epoxy

With the calculated amount of epoxy you can purchase the necessary materials. Make sure you use the correct mixing ratio and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully for the best result. At epoxy shop itsOkay you will find high-quality epoxy products for every type of project. We recommend this ultra epoxy for crystal clear coatings.

Table of required epoxy

Use the table below to quickly and easily calculate the right amount of epoxy for your project. For table tops and art projects, an average epoxy layer varies between 3 mm and 6 mm. The table provides an overview of the most common sizes and layer thicknesses, so you know exactly how much epoxy casting resin you need.
