Zelf leuke boekenleggers maken! - itsOkay

Make nice bookmarks yourself!

In this manual, Petra explains step by step how to make 3 types of bookmarks: with glitter, flowers and with a text/name.

My name is Petra Laan, 34 years old. I have written several blogs for itsOkay. You can find me on Instagram and Facebook under the to DoorPetra . Here I regularly post fun creations of my cards, baby gifts, epoxy jewelry and key rings.

What do you need:
- Epoxy resin 1:1 casting resin : this is resin for large surfaces
- Silicone Mixing Cups (or your own disposable cups)
- Silicone epoxy mold bookmark
- Work gloves
- Dried flowers or Glitters or pigments
- Stir sticks (I use popsicle sticks)
- Text from a cutting plotter or a permanent marker
* Always work with gloves and a face mask

Possibly:
- Silicone mat
- Baby wipes (in case of spills)
- Tassels (hip tassel for your bookmark)
- Heat gun or lighter (to pop the bubbles in the resin)

Preparation

For the bookmarks that I am going to make in this blog I choose Epoxy resin 1:1 . The epoxy consists of two components: a resin and a hardener. The mixing ratio is very easy, namely 1:1. I first weigh 10 grams of component A, the epoxy resin, and then I weigh 10 grams of component B, the epoxy hardener. So I prepare a total of 20 grams of epoxy resin, this is more than enough for one bookmark.

Always read the instructions before pouring. The instructions are on the packaging and the product page of the Epoxy Resin - 1:1 Casting Resin.

Bookmark with glitter

Always make sure that your work surface is well covered and that the table or surface is level. If the silicone mold is tilted and you have already poured, the epoxy resin will dry at an angle: you don't want that. For this first bookmark I only use glitter.

Step 1: Mixing Epoxy Resin

Prepare 20 grams of epoxy resin in a small mixing cup or a silicone mixing cup . Use gloves here and make sure you work in a well-ventilated area and wear a face mask if necessary.

Step 2: Adding Glitter to the Epoxy Resin

Because glitter and other decorations in epoxy resin sink to the bottom, I always use a lot of glitter. Add one or more colors of glitter. Stir this well through the epoxy resin and let it stand for a while so that the air bubbles largely disappear.

Step 3: Fill the mold

Fill the mold with the epoxy resin that you mixed with the glitter. For the best result, make sure that the mold is filled just over the edge (a little fuller). You will then see a bulge of resin appear in the mold. The epoxy resin always shrinks a little during the hardening process. In this way, the epoxy resin hardens nicely flat. If you do not do this, sharp edges can appear when it has hardened.
Finally, carefully run a heat tool (such as a lighter) along the epoxy resin and pop the bubbles.

Step 4: Remove from the mold

This is my favorite part! After 24 to 48 hours the bookmark has hardened and you can carefully remove it from the mold. Decorate the bookmarks with a nice tassel and make someone happy with it (a tassel is a trendy brush).

Bookmark with glitter and pigments

For this bookmark I use glitter and pigment colors .

Step 1: Mixing Epoxy Resin

Prepare 20 grams of epoxy resin in a small mixing cup or a silicone mixing cup . Use gloves and make sure you work in a well-ventilated area and wear a face mask if necessary.

Step 2: Add Pigment

I put about 15 grams of the 20 grams of epoxy resin in a separate cup. I add white opaque pigment to this. Four drops is often enough. You can see in the photo below that I added four drops to the resin in the mixing cup. You can also choose a little metallic pearl white pigment . Gently stir the pigments you choose through the epoxy resin and let it stand for a while so that the air bubbles pop.

Step 3: Add glitter

I add glitter to the remaining 5 grams of epoxy resin . Stir this well and let it sit for a while. Use gloves here and make sure you work in a well-ventilated area and wear a face mask if necessary.

Step 4: Fill the mold

At the bottom of the mold I pour the epoxy resin with glitter and at the top the epoxy resin with the pigment. Make sure that the entire mold is well covered with epoxy resin for the best result. Carefully drip a little resin with for example an ice lolly stick so that the mold is well filled.
Finally, carefully run a heat tool (such as a lighter) along the epoxy resin and pop the bubbles.

Step 5: Remove from the mold

After 24 to 48 hours the bookmark has hardened and you can carefully remove it from the mold. You have now made a nice bookmark with two colors. If the bookmark is still flexible, it is not yet fully hardened.

Bookmark with dried flowers and text

I am going to cast this bookmark in two times. So I first make the base (bottom ready) and later another layer will be added if there is text on the bottom layer. You can print a text as an image on your computer, cut it out and laminate it, use a sticker, apply it with a permanent marker or make it with a cutting plotter machine like I did.

Step 1: Mixing Epoxy Resin

Prepare 20 grams of epoxy resin in a small mixing cup or a silicone mixing cup . Use gloves here and make sure you work in a well-ventilated area and wear a face mask if necessary.

Step 2: Fill the mold

Fill the mold with the epoxy resin , but do not fill it completely because a second layer will be added.

Step 3: Add flowers

Now add a few dried small flowers , do this carefully because dried flowers are very fragile. I also add a bit of gold foil for the shine. I use a cocktail stick for this. When all the flowers are in the epoxy resin , wait a day. This way this layer hardens and you can pour the next layer over it later. If you were to do this in one go, the flowers will sink all the way down and that is not pretty. Never use fresh flowers: then the rotting process of the flowers continues in the resin. They must be flat and bone dry!

Step 4: Add text

I cut out a text with my plotter machine, but you can also print a text as an image on your computer, cut it out and laminate it, use a sticker, apply it with a permanent marker or do it like I did with a cutting plotter machine. Of course you can also skip this step if you don't want text.

Step 5: Prepare the epoxy resin

Prepare 5-10 grams of epoxy resin for the final layer that you will pour on top. Use gloves for this and make sure you work in a well-ventilated area and wear a face mask if necessary.

Step 6: Fill the rest of the mold

Now fill the mold until a bulge is formed. Make sure all decorations and the text are well covered with epoxy resin. Finally, carefully go over the epoxy resin with a heat tool and let the bubbles pop.

Step 7: Remove from the mold

After 24 to 48 hours the bookmark has hardened and you can carefully remove it from the mold. You have now made a nice bookmark with flowers and possibly a text.
Through the small hole in the top of the mold you can put a nice tassel , this makes the bookmark complete! Have fun making your bookmarks! Love, Petra.
