DIY Gift Tip! Making a bottle opener with epoxy resin

Sometimes you just don't know what to make or sometimes the things you make aren't always that useful... that's a shame! In this manual Petra takes you through the process of making bottle openers with epoxy resin. Great to give to your boyfriend/husband or to make together with your (grand)child for Father's Day!

Hey hello my name is Petra Laan. You can find me on Instagram and Facebook as DoorPetra . I often write articles and manuals for itsOkay. Nice that you ended up on this manual.. This time you will be guided step by step to make nice bottle openers for example for Father's Day. You can go in many directions with this, I show you how to make a bottle opener with two different colors.

At the bottom of this page I will show several end results for inspiration. Have fun making the openers.

Supplies:
- Epoxy resin 1:1 (cheap for large areas)
- Bottle opener package (silicone mold + 5 openers)
- Pigments for epoxy , glitter , decoration as desired
- Gloves
- Mixing spatulas and cocktail sticks
- Mixing cups (preferably silicone)
- Text from a cutting plotter or a permanent marker
- Heat tool or lighter (for air bubbles)
- Baby wipes (in case of spills)
- Screwdriver

For making the openers I only use the Epoxy resin 1:1 . This resin is cheap for large surfaces and very easy to use. The instructions for mixing are on the packaging and the product page, but it is not that difficult.
The Bottle Opener Making Kit includes a silicone bottle opener mold and 5 metal openers. You will need about 60 grams of resin to fill the entire mold (5 bottle openers).

Step 1: Mixing epoxy for the first coat

We use the Epoxy resin 1:1 . So you mix this resin 1:1. First prepare a total of about 40 grams of epoxy resin according to the instructions on the bottle. So 20 grams of component A and 20 grams of component B. Stir this gently for a few minutes.

I then choose to add Premium Metallic Pigment Powders to the mixed epoxy resin. I chose a green color. They give a very nice opaque glossy color and you only need a pinch! After mixing the epoxy resin with the pigments you have chosen, let the epoxy resin rest for a while so that the air bubbles disappear.

Step 2: Pouring the epoxy resin into the mold

Pour the epoxy resin slowly into the mold: up to half the mold or a little over. In the picture you can see that I also poured other molds with black/black Premium Metallic Pigment Powders and one with gold foil, these were leftover epoxy resin that I had made earlier that day and still had. We are not going to fill the mold in one go.

Step 3: Waiting

Wait 24 hours before pouring the next layer.

Step 4: Mixing epoxy resin for a second coat

The second layer will be a clear layer of epoxy resin that does not contain any pigments. This will ensure a nice shiny top layer of the bottle opener where you can also pour decorations, photos or text. Prepare approximately 20 grams of epoxy resin according to the instructions. Stir this gently and let it stand for a while.

Step 5: Add text or decoration

I choose to add a text and image to the bottle opener. For Father's Day I add my husband's name and his favorite beer . This is a vinyl sticker and I made it with my cutting plotter. However, you can also write text on the epoxy resin with a waterproof marker or glass marker. For more tips on this, see this blog: epoxy resin coasters with text or photo .

Step 6: Pour the second layer of epoxy resin into the mold

Now slowly pour the second and final layer into the mold. Make sure that the mold is filled just above the edge for the best end result. The epoxy resin shrinks during curing. If you fill the mold 'too empty' or just to the edge, sharp raised edges will form later because it shrinks a little.

I mix a little more epoxy resin so I can fill the rest of the molds as well, such as with the pink Metallic Pigments Powders for epoxy resin .

Step 7: Wait

Wait 24 to 48 hours for the epoxy resin to fully harden before removing the opener from the mold.

Step 8: Installing the Iron Opener

The Bottle Opener Making Kit that we use also includes 5 irons. You will open the bottles with these! Place these with the right side facing up. The top has a small notch at the screw holes. Screw the screws in gently with some force. Did this work? Then you have made an opener yourself!

Tip: wash the bottle opener when it is dirty and do not put it in the dishwasher.

Nice ideas!

Below are some fun ideas that you can also see in the photos!

- Two coats; clear with copper flakes and metallic powder copper
- Clear with dried flowers

Lots of fun reading and crafting. Love Petra.
