DIY Gift Tip! Making a bottle opener with epoxy resin

Sometimes you don't know what to make anymore or sometimes the things you make are not always useful... that's a shame! In this manual, Petra takes you through the process of making bottle openers with epoxy resin. Great to give to your boyfriend/husband or to make together with your (grand)child for Father's Day!

Hey hello my name is Petra Laan. You can find me on Instagram and Facebook as DoorPetra . I often write articles and manuals for itsOkay. Nice that you ended up on this manual. This time you will be taken step by step to make nice bottle openers for Father's Day, for example. You can do a lot with this, I'll show you how to make a bottle opener with two different colors.

At the bottom of this page I will show several end results for inspiration. Have fun making the openers.

- Epoxy resin 1:1 (cheap for large surfaces)
- Bottle opener package (silicone mold + 5 openers)
- Pigments for epoxy , glitter , decoration as desired
- Gloves
- Mixing spatulas and cocktail sticks
- Mixing cups (preferably silicone)
- Text from a cutting plotter or permanent marker
- Heat tool or lighter (for air bubbles)
- Baby wipes (in case you make a spill)
- Screwdriver

To make the openers I only use the Epoxy resin 1:1 . This resin is cheap for large surfaces and very easy to use. The instructions for mixing are on the packaging and product page, but it's not that difficult.
The bottle opener making package contains a silicone mold bottle opener and 5 metal openers. You will need approximately 60 grams of resin to fill the entire mold (5 bottle openers).

Step 1: Mixing epoxy for the first coat

We use the Epoxy resin 1:1 . So you mix this resin 1:1. First prepare a total of approximately 40 grams of epoxy resin according to the instructions on the bottle. So 20 grams of component A and 20 grams of component B. Stir this together gently for a few minutes.

I then choose to add Premium Metallic Pigments Powders to the mixed epoxy resin. I chose a green color. They give a very nice opaque glossy color and you only need a pinch of it! After mixing the epoxy resin with the pigments you have chosen, let the epoxy resin rest for a while so that the air bubbles are removed.

Step 2: Pouring the epoxy resin into the mold

Slowly pour the epoxy resin into the mold: up to half of the mold or slightly over. In the photo you can see that I also cast other shapes with black/black Premium Metallic Pigments Powders and one with gold foil, these were leftover epoxy resin that I had made earlier in the day and had left over. We are not going to fill the mold in one go.

Step 3: Wait

Wait 24 hours before pouring the next layer.

Step 4: Mixing epoxy resin for a second coat

The second layer becomes a clear layer of epoxy resin that does not contain any pigments. This will provide a nice shiny top layer of the bottle opener into which you can also pour decorations, photos or text. Prepare approximately 20 grams of epoxy resin according to the instructions. Stir it gently and let it stand for a while.

Step 5: Add text or decoration

I choose to add a text and image to the bottle opener. For Father's Day I am adding my husband's name and his favorite beer . This is a vinyl sticker and I made it with my cutting plotter. However, you can also write text on the epoxy resin with a waterproof marker or glass marker. For more tips on this, see this blog: making epoxy resin coasters with text or photo .

Step 6: Pour the second layer of epoxy resin into the mold

Now slowly pour the second and final layer into the mold. Make sure that the mold is filled just above the edge for the best end result. The epoxy resin shrinks during curing. If you fill the mold 'too empty' or just fill it to the brim, sharp raised edges will soon form because it shrinks slightly.

I mix a little more epoxy resin so that I can fill the rest of the molds as well, such as with the pink Metallic Pigments Powders for Epoxy Resin .

Step 7: Wait

Wait 24 to 48 hours until the epoxy resin has completely hardened and then remove the opener from the mold.

Step 8: Installing the Iron Opener

The bottle opener making package we use also contains 5 irons. You will use this to open the bottles later! Placed it with the right side up. The top has a small notch near the screw holes. Screw in the screws slowly with some force. Did this work? Then you have made your own opener!

Tip: wash the bottle opener if it is dirty and do not put it in the dishwasher.

Nice ideas!

Below are some fun ideas that you can also see in the photos!

- Two layers; opaque black and metallic powder pink
- Two layers; bright with copper flakes and metallic powder copper
- Clear with dried flowers
- Glitter! Lots of glitter!
- Opaque black with silver glitter
- Decoration mix with fruit pieces

Lots of reading and crafting fun. Love Petra.
